Three-D Skillsoutlining skill(association, organization and imagination), lexical competence skill(the choice of lexical units), grammatical proficiency skill(the application of grammar points)

美國新總統Obama也follow the convention

Obama said(1:25), "I hereby pardon Courage so that he can live up the rest of his days in peace and tranquility in Disneyland."

Recently, I found more and more of my students writing and speaking English.
To be frank, I am so delighted and that's why I decided to use English to write this diary.

To begin with, let me talk about my health condition.
Again, I'm under the weather and it's been with me for almost a week.
I hate that but I can't control that.
If I need to blame on anything, the weather will be the first one to come to mind.
Warm and cool, cold and hot, I really don't konw what to wear every day before I go to school, to tell the truth.

Because of the sickness, I lost my vigor and missed the chance to take photos for my dear DA2-4 studnets on Wednesday, 11/25.
I had my digital camera with me, but it was a pity that I couldn't find any "perfect" moment to take pictures for you guys. Sorry about that.
Oh, Charlie Bai is really good at singing. His voice reminded me one of my idols, David Tao.

Being together with my DA2-4 for 4 months now, I feel more joyful and high spirit, and most important of all, I really have this kind of "family" feeling. That's quite valuable and I really appreciate that. It is because all of you that we could be united like a family.

The General Scholastic Ability Test (學測) is coming soon. All the seniors need to work all out to realize thier full potential. I have faith in you so please don't give up easily. If you know "Rome wasn't built in a day," then you'll know how important perseverance is. Just go for it and realize your dream.

Last but not least, 祝我所有在當兵的前boys only班,好好保重~

If you’re like, “whatever,” and someone gives you a mean look, just remember it is what it is – certain sayings rub people the wrong way, you know?  Anyway, at the end of the day, who cares?

If the above paragraph thoroughly irritated you, you’re probably not alone.  The question is, which word or phrase bothered you the most?

Chances are it was “whatever.”  In a recent Marist poll, nearly half of Americans – 47% – said they find “whatever” most annoying.  The other sayings weren’t quite so loathed.  25% say they find “you know” most grating; 11% can’t stand “it is what it is”; 7% would like to ban “anyway” from all verbal exchanges; and 2% reported that they could do without hearing “at the end of the day.”

Interestingly, if you’re traveling to the Midwest, it might be especially wise to leave your store of “whatevers” at home.  55% of residents in that region dislike the term, while only 19% of them disapprove of “you know.”  In contrast, 35% of Northeast residents say “whatever” is most annoying, while 32% are most bothered by “you know.” (http://maristpoll.marist.edu/index.php?s=whatever+you+know)

還有2%的人不喜歡「最終」(at the end of the day)這句話。

If I were ever fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go anywhere with a partner of my choice, I would choose Shakespeare as my companion. As the greatest poet and playwright in the history of English literature, he would be bound to have great knowledge and insight into what we call beauty; thus the artistic side of me would be refreshed with nourishments of the dazzling world of imagination.

Together we would read his immortal classics and fall for the eternal love between Romeo and Juliet, and laugh at the irony behind the foolish conducts of Hamlet. After the warm-up, my creative brain cells would be put into full gear, and we would set off on our journey.

We would go hiking together. The birds would chirp above our heads as a warm welcome, and in return Shakespeare would immediately write down yet another masterpiece to thank their hospitality. We would waltz under the emerald green shade to the rhythm of rustling leaves, and for a rest we would sit on the banks of a brook and talk about books and music as fish swim around our bare feet.

As we ascend the hill, blazing rays from the sun would try to stop us in our paths, but a cool breeze would caress our cheeks, taking the sweat and tiredness away as they sing a melody of harmony to urge us on. Finally, when we reach the hilltop, we would peer down at the rolling hills beneath and up at the clear blue sky above, and as we amuse ourselves with the twisting clouds transforming into a million different shapes, Nature would begin its grand symphony to celebrate our triumph, and at that moment, we would understand, from deep in our heart, the untold significance and beauty of Nature.

Daddy longlegs

黃色的AE3-2, I miss you.)

去年紅色外三寫了追風箏的孩子(The Kite Runner)我真的是打從心裡佩服(to Josephine and all of you students)。

The Catcher in the Rye

2.

the five people you meet in heaven

3.

My sister's keeper

May 30, the grand final day. I've been longing for it for so long. Unlike American Idol, which you can watch directly from one of the TV channels, Britain's Got Talent is something you have to wait until the show on the internet is available. Before turning my computer on and checking out who the winner was, "Diversity" came to my mind. But little did I know that I was so great in guessing and appreciating the talent and it turned out that I was completely right. The winner of Britain's Got Talent 2009 is "Diversity."

Second place goes to Susan Boyle: I dreamed a dream

No.3 is Julian Smith: Somewhere

*semi-final I(5/24): Susan Boyle(48, Singer), Diversity (12~25, Street dancers)

Susan Boyle(演唱Memory from "Cats")

(I dreamed a dream from "The Miserables")

Summer Love Song

Summer heat is everywhere

Music of love is in the air

Wanna live and die for you

I don’t care about nothing else

What can I do?

Say “yes, I do.”

**Cuz I don’t wanna live without you

I just wanna stay beside you

Hold you close and hold you tight
I will love you till the day I die

I don’t care what people will say

I just wanna go my own way

Let me take you to the paradise

A place for you and I**

What a pretty girl you are

Like an angel in my mind

Like an angel gives the light

How I wish that you were mine

Repeat **

Cuz I don’t wanna live without you

I just wanna stay beside you

Hold you close and hold you tight

I will love you till the day I die

Fear and sorrow get out of my mind

Girl you know you’re the one in my mind

Let me take you to the paradise

A place for you and I

You and I

每一組有不同的主題: love, life, friendship, freedom and appearance

Fish and Water

Fish Melody

I Want Freedom

I Want You

Just Eat

Love Song

Simple Life

The Damn Weight

Hello, Chicago.

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.

We are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Senator McCain.

Senator McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

I congratulate him; I congratulate Governor Palin for all that they've achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton ... and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years ... the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady ... Michelle Obama.

Sasha and Malia ... I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us ...to the new White House.

And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother's watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my sister Maya, my sister Alma, all my other brothers and sisters, thank you so much for all the support that you've given me. I am grateful to them.

And to my campaign manager, David Plouffe ... the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best _ the best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America.

To my chief strategist David Axelrod ... who's been a partner with me every step of the way.

To the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics ... you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.

But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to. It belongs to you. It belongs to you.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause.

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy ... who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.

It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth.

This is your victory.

And I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you didn't do it for me.

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime _ two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.

Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.

There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills or save enough for their child's college education.

There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

I promise you, we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can't solve every problem.

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years _ block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.

In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.

Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.

Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.

As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.

And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.

To those _ to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.

That's the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can be perfected. What we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons _ because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America _ the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that We Shall Overcome. Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination.

And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.

Yes we can.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves _ if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.

Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.

Alliteration is the repetition of the first consonant sound in a phrase.
(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliteration)

For example:

  • Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

Unit 76 標題 A Maker of Mobils,就有m 的alliteration

  • wonderful wife
  • juicy juice
  • beautiful b**ch (因為不文雅 ,so消音)
  • handsome Henry
  • A can can can a can?
  • saw a saw saw a saw (這一句可當奪魂鋸的slogan)

I have a terribly terrible memory.

Trick or treat!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
這一篇文章會引起我的注意除了很多我的學生是so-called應用外語科畢業之外, 這一篇文章在網路上也引起了一些筆戰, 大部份認為應外的學生程度比外文系的差. (請見http://mag.udn.com/mag/campus/storypage.jsp?f_ART_ID=133152)
台大有外國語文學系(Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures),清大也有外國語文學系(Department of Foreing Languages and Literature) . 兩個學校的英文除了在literature有單複數的差別之外, 其他並無區別. 可是台大的這個系我們慣稱它為台大外'文'系; 而清大的這個系在我念的時候, 我們對外宣稱的是清大外'語'系. 其實嚴格的說除了清大之外, 全台灣的大學只要有外國語文學系的都會被稱為外文系. 所以那時只要介紹自己是清大外語系, 總是覺得自己很特別. 雖然我們叫外語系, 可是我們系上也offer很多文學課程, 我們甚至還有文學所. 所以如果說外語系只focus在語言學或語言教學,這樣的說法並不完整.
台科大想要改名字的理由, 我所贊同的只有一個, 那就是在申請國外的研究所時, 國外大學可能不知道應外系是學什麼的. 除此之外, 我不認為它有改名字的必要. 身為英文老師, 我認為應用外語科(系)不同於純外文(語)在於本科系強調的是把語言應用於商業上. 所以除了英文聽說讀寫的能力之外, 其商業知識也必須要豐富, 這樣才能有別於只主修商業的人. 今年剛結束的統測還有專一考的是商業相關科目. 明年開始連商業相關科目都不考了, 所以如果單純為了升學,似乎沒有學商業科目的必要. 也就是說這一批人跟一般高中畢業進入大學念外文(語)系並沒有什麼不同. 可是高中生還有學史地公民理化生物, 可是應外的學生卻只有學國英數,   這樣看來, 不難看出為何一般人會認為大部分應外系的學生程度不及外文(語)系了.
雖然應用外語科在升學的管道上與商業類組比相對的狹窄, 但我始終認為應用外語科有他商業加語文的特殊性, 只是升學的考科大方向必須調整, (例如可用英文考商業相關科目), 如此應外畢業的學生才可以將應外的名聲拓展開來.
唉呦~我又嚴肅了!
但等一下要做的事更嚴肅~算期末成績去!
前陣子有同學問我托福要怎麼準備,今天剛好在聯合報看到相關的訊息,因此貼來給同學參考看看,看來真的不容易! (Pamela)
要考好新托福,一招半式走江湖不再有用,必須能聽能看又能寫,而且要對美國有足夠了解,不只歷史,連他們的文化、科技、政治、宗教或時事議題都要知道。
根據美國教育測驗服務社(Educational Testing Service,ETS)日前公佈的資料顯示,新托福實施後,台灣考生的托福成績在全球數十個國家中,僅贏過日本,甚至輸給尼泊爾、土庫曼和烏茲別克等非英語系國家,全亞洲倒數第二。究竟托福難在哪,又該如何準備才能獲取高分?
國立台灣科技大學應用外語系助理教授黃玟君表示,新制托福最關鍵的兩項要素在「聽懂」和「讀懂」,因為幾乎每個大題都會運用到上述兩項能力。舉例來說,在考寫作測驗時,會先要求學生聽一段教授在課堂中的演講,再叫學生閱讀一篇與演講有關的文章,最後再分析比較兩者間的異同,寫出一篇250至300字左右的文章。學生若是聽不懂或讀不懂,文筆再好也是枉然。
黃玟君說,新托福測驗的不再只單純測驗學生的英語能力,還添加了批判性思考、比較及綜合整理等學術性能力(academic skills),這些都非短期內可以速成,「即使是母語人士,在沒有充分準備的情況下,也不見得能夠獲取高分。」
雖然比舊制難上許多,但整體的大方向仍然值得肯定,否則往往有亞洲托福滿分的學生,到了美國才發現根本無法適應,上課就像鴨子聽雷,不僅跟不上進度,還耽誤了的學業,打擊自己的信心。
既然並非短期內能夠速成,黃玟君強調,傳統補習班的幫助自然相當有限。她建議,若想考取高分,廣泛的閱讀和大量的聽力練習是不可或缺的關鍵因素。但所謂廣泛或大量,並非漫無章法地亂槍打鳥,應該依循ETS的出題模式著手。例如,大多數台灣學生考托福的目的,不外乎將來赴美求學時所需,因此,舉凡與美國有關的歷史、文化、科技、政治宗教甚至是時事議題等,都是出題率非常高的教材,「畢竟是美國人出的考題,這樣的趨勢在所難免。」
除此之外,平時多看外國電影或是多聽西洋歌曲也是很好的練習方法之一。一來可以熟悉母語人士的聲調變化和連音技巧,二來也能夠以較為輕鬆的方式,了解當地的文化傳統與說話模式,這些都對考試相當大的助益。
斗六市地球村美語老師林錦和,參加多益(TOEIC)測驗,考了990滿分,目前已知台灣只有3人滿分,他是其中之一。很難想像,林錦和國一時的英文,只考了9分。 39歲的林錦和,在斗六的英文名字是「John」,在台北補習界,則是「林強」。當上英文老師,林錦和有個有趣的故事。 林錦和說,這輩子第1次考英文,是在斗六國中,當時只考了9分。他說,當時因為被英文老師體罰,對英文產生排斥感,開始不喜歡英文,到最後,乾脆什麼都不唸。 國二時英文老師,則是當他考試有進步時,就會鼓勵,「有時摸我的頭」林錦和說,那種被人關心的感覺真好。因此,他開始認真讀英文,愈讀愈有趣,老師鼓勵他看英文小說。 國中3年,他讀了近200本英文小說,但沒有反映在英文成績上。考進正心中學(Pamela的母校),他的英文成績是53分,但3年後的大學聯考,英文則近80分,是當年英文的前100名,他選擇淡江英語系。 今年4月,林錦和參加多益(TOEIC)測驗,得到990分的滿分。常有人問他是怎麼讀的?他說,除了興趣,老師的鼓勵也很重要。英文從9分考到990滿分,對許多人來說,似乎不可思議,卻是林錦和真實的故事。
